Self Care For Caregivers

Prioritizing Self-Care: Resources for Caregivers and Beyond in North Central Kansas

Self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Whether you’re a caregiver or simply managing the demands of daily life, prioritizing your own well-being helps maintain good health, focus, and resilience. At OCCK, we’re proud to serve over 12 counties in North Central Kansas with resources that make self-care achievable for everyone.

Self-Care for Caregivers

As the saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty bucket.” Taking care of yourself is essential to giving quality care. Here are a few practical self-care tips for caregivers:

Monitor Your Well-Being: Watch for signs of stress, such as impatience, loss of appetite, or difficulty sleeping, concentrating, or remembering tasks. Pay attention to changes in mood, interest in activities, or your ability to accomplish everyday tasks.

  • Stay Calm to Help Others Stay Calm: In cases of people with dementia, they will often mirror the emotions of their caregivers. If you’re stressed, they will likely feel stressed too.
  • Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Dehydration can happen quickly and is dangerous. Drink plenty of water, eat balanced meals, and don’t skip eating—you need your strength.
  • Move and Rest: Incorporate short walks into your routine at least three times a week and schedule rest periods between activities.
  • Set Realistic Limits: Avoid overloading your daily to-do list. Be honest with yourself about what you can reasonably accomplish and give yourself downtime to recharge.
  • Make Time for Joy: Spend a few hours each week doing things you find meaningful or enjoyable. Play and laughter can be powerful stress relievers.
  • Ask for Help: Let family members and friends assist with household chores, meal prep, childcare, or errands. Create a list of tasks you could use help with, so you’re ready when someone says, “Let me know if you need anything.”
  • Communicate Openly: Talk about your feelings with family, friends, other caregivers, or a support group. Bottling up emotions like frustration, anger, or loneliness can harm your mental and physical health.
  • Give Yourself Credit: Remember, the care you provide makes a meaningful difference.
