Staying active can play an important role in maintaining strength, balance, and confidence!

One local program helping people do exactly that is Punchin’ Out Parkinson’s, a Central Kansas nonprofit that offers boxing-inspired fitness classes designed for people living with Parkinson’s disease.

Even better — you might see a familiar face from OCCK, Inc.

Danya Dent, a Physical Therapist Assistant with OCCK, Inc.’s In My Home Home Health team, helps coach classes with ‘Punchin’ Out Parkinson’s’ and will be teaching every second and fourth Monday of the month alongside other program coaches.

Programs like this bring people together to move, build strength, and support one another in a positive environment.

Understanding Parkinson’s and Support Options

  • What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement. It occurs when the brain gradually loses dopamine-producing cells, which help control coordination and muscle activity.

Symptoms often begin gradually and may start on one side of the body.

    Common symptoms may include:

    • Tremor – shaking that often appears in a resting hand, arm, or leg

    • Slowed movement (bradykinesia) – difficulty starting movements or completing tasks

    • Muscle stiffness (rigidity) – tight or sore muscles that can limit movement

    • Balance challenges – which may increase fall risk

Some people may also notice early changes such as:

    • Loss of smell

    • Smaller or cramped handwriting

    • Speech becoming softer or monotone

    • Reduced facial expression due to decreased muscle movement

Parkinson’s symptoms can change over time, but many people find that staying physically active helps support mobility and overall well-being.

  • Why Boxing for Parkinson’s?

Programs like Punchin’ Out Parkinson’s use non-contact boxing-inspired exercise to help people challenge coordination, balance, strength, and speed.

    Classes include activities such as:

    • Boxing drills and punching combinations

    • Balance and coordination exercises

    • Strength and endurance training

    • Movement activities designed to encourage quick reactions and controlled motion

These workouts are designed to help participants stay active, build confidence, and maintain independence while working in a supportive group setting.

Just as important as the physical benefits, the program bringing together people who understand and encourage each other.
