A teenager may be preparing for work.
An adult may need transportation.
Someone adapting after an injury may need equipment for a while.
An older adult may want to remain living at home.
Different stage. Different goal. Different solution.
Assistive Technology
Technology can be simple.
Assistive Technology is any tool that helps a person do something they want or need to do. It can be low-cost and familiar—or more specialized. The right fit depends on the person, the goal and the setting.
- Built-up utensils
- Easier-to-press buttons
- Phone accessibility settings
- Magnification and captioning
- Modified game controllers
- Medication reminders
- Smart lights
- Communication and mobility devices
“We start with the person. Start with the goal. Then find the tool or support that fits.”– Tyler Stoddard, Director of Assistive Technology

Why rural access matters
Where someone lives should not determine whether they can explore tools and support that may make everyday life easier.
Transportation is access.
Getting to work, a grocery store, an appointment, a class or a community event can be part of the solution.
Tell us what you are trying to do.
You do not need to know which OCCK department, service or technology you need. Tell us what is getting in the way or what you would like to learn more about.
