A Story of Growth and Career Success

In 2020, as the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses closed their doors, with some never reopening. Willie has been employed in his community job for three and a half years and believes it is the perfect position for him. He excelled in his role, which provided him with the financial means to enjoy activities with his mom, brother, and friends.

In 2021, when the business reopened, Willie was informed that his position had been eliminated and that he would not be offered his job back. This news left him feeling devastated, especially since he had always been a reliable employee—never calling in sick—and frequently stepped in to assist when others were unavailable. Willie expressed, “I need repetitive work in a friendly, slow-paced environment that allows me to grow at my own pace.”

After many job applications, we received the unfortunate news that the positions have been filled. We have returned to the discovery process of finding the right job for this individual. We first assessed his strengths and then identified his barriers. After reviewing a potential job opportunity, we went on a tour followed by a job shadowing experience the following week. He expressed, “That’s the job I want.” By building his resume around his strengths and discussing his barriers with the employer, we were able to carve out a position for him while also allowing room to address his challenges. Willie noted that this job offers growth opportunities, and he hopes to eventually work in produce or even dairy.
